Backyard garden City Historic Culture has a contemporary consider on mission

By Rikki N. Massand The new leadership of the Garden City Historical Society, headquartered at the 1872 Victorian “Apostle House” Museum at 109 Eleventh Street, has a fresh take on its mission. With new leadership, the society is is looking to serve the community more as an asset and a vehicle to teach new generations about the village’s unique history. New Society President William (Bill) Garry grew up in the village and attended Chaminade High School. In his hometown, he’s also a member and volunteer appointed to the Village of Garden City’s Board of Commissioners of Recreation and Cultural Affairs, (also known as the Rec. Commission). The new Vice President, Jon Segerdahl, was a village trustee for several years, and like Garry he hails from the Eastern section of the village. “Jon as part of the leadership, with his municipal experience, and myself with many years of living in the village, will continue with evolving the Historical Society’s message to advocate for responsible Preservation -- how far that goes in every unique situation would be influenced by several factors and considerations. The Garden City Historical Society does not tell homeowners what to do at their properties but we are always happy to provide whatever we can in terms of insight and even some assistance about grants potentially available for the hire of historic preservation architects -- things like that. My hope is that our delivery of the core messages of preservation and education will be delivered to the community more effectively, and I would like the Village Board of Trustees to come to look upon the Historical Society as an asset to turn to and help them in their mission to govern and continue making Garden City sustainable,” Garry said in an interview with the News. Support for GC’s Historical Resources The Historical Society remains a staunch advocate for preservation of historic buildings and structures in Garden City, and the cause for preserving history has come up often. So many icons of the past, predating the Village’s incorporation in 1919, have made headlines during the year -- this fall, with stabilization work ongoing at the St. Paul’s main building; the rehabilitation of the Nassau Boulevard LIRR red brick, herringbone pattern parking lot; the former Long Island Motor Parkway stretch now constructed as Stewart Field parking, just off Raymond Court, and village’s license agreement for the Garden City Casino, built in 1895 and designed by famous architect Stanford White, who served on the Garden City Company’s board of directors in the late 1800s. The advocacy for St. Paul’s to remain standing and keeping what can responsibly be kept of the original edifice will continue. Although some residents have told the Garden City Board of Trustees that the village should demolish the historic building, there are many who believe in the appeal and character of St. Paul’s. “Whatever the outcome in terms of saving the structure, it;s of major importance to the Historical Society and to the Village of Garden City that it will remain on the National Register. That’s important, but it does mean we would be insisting on saving every square inch of the building as-is. The building was built as a private school and I don’t believe I’ve heard any options of it being restored to school-use or function. It is a challenge but I know there is a plan out there for St. Paul’s that will be successful,” Garry explained. The local business community in Garden City should also benefit from a strong level of Historical Society outreach and its educational endeavors. “We are not potentially an adversary to government or to the business community and Garden City Chamber -- but the onus is on us, not them, to craft our message and follow through on our mission in a way for the Society to be seen as contributors to Garden City’s prosperity,” Garry said. Segerdahl says from the Board of Trustees to the Chamber, and even the four property owners’ associations, each level of civic life in Garden City “does not like to be told what they should be doing.” He sees the opportunity now for the Historical Society to shift the dialogue it engages in to offer each group a new perspective, becoming more accommodating and reaching out -- starting with asking village trustees, the POA directors and more “How can we help you, because we do have mutual goals?” Items like the Fire Station No. 2 (Edgemere Road and Stewart Avenue) and the Nassau Boulevard LIRR station are projects the Historical Society can provide resources for, such as research, during the planning stages, rather than being contentious once plans are already underway. “We can get the message across that we’re looking to help out, we’re ready and this is where we are headed,” Segerdahl said. The Historical Society is engaging with residents and newcomers on Facebook and Instagram (its handle is @gardencityhistoricalsociety) and with word of mouth reactions to the innovative programming and activities that are lining up this fall and beyond. Former Village of Garden City Historian and longtime Historical Society volunteer and trustee Suzie Alvey moved to Florida a few years ago, but with the world working remotely in 2020 she “reactivated” with GCHS and has been involved in planning, and is considered “GCHS trustee emeritus” Bill Garry says. “We have a simple charter and mission as we’re engaged with the preservation space, however the Garden City Historical Society is in the education space -- we exist as a nonprofit organization chartered by the New York State Department of Education. Our charter is in Education space and the simple goal for us is taking artifacts and what we have, including the House Museum from local history and bringing the story forward to the community -- both education and preservation are important,” he explains. Local control in preservation Despite the many A.T. Stewart-era homes in the Central section of town, the Village of Garden City does not have any designated local historic districts. There are only individual properties which earned national recognition and official listing on the National Register of Historic Places, which is under the United States Department of the Interior and Secretary of the Interior’s records. Bill Garry finds it interesting that Garden City has so much in common with communities across America’s Northeast in terms of older, stately homes in communities where real estate values are high, but there is no local-level designation for protecting any properties in the village. “In historic preservation it is extremely helpful to have a layer of zoning code (local level) as there’s then a pass-through of what can be done to preserve that status. A big draw for the village is that it has appeal in proximity to New York City and with LIRR stations, it is suburban enough and orderly. In Garden City, which other places may not have, there is some uniformity and although there are smaller homes and larger homes, this village from its four sections is pretty uniform. I believe it is something about the layout that people like as they feel our community cares for the whole community as opposed to preferred sites,” Bill Garry said. One example he points to are his son and daughter-in-law enjoying their walks to Seventh Street and the appeal of the scenery they and so many others find. Children’s Art Projects a Success The Society has the objective of attracting members from throughout the community, from young families to seniors. Garry says GCHS can build and sustain memberships across the range of demographics in the community, and always seek innovative new ways to introduce the rich history of the village, Long Island and the country to new audiences. “To be successful in attracting more family memberships we must offer things that people will see as in the
ir interest to join. In the education space, we have advised 100 families and children about Jackson Pollock, art, fun and an activity to do safely together. We’re offering our resources and programs that encourage more participation and people to discover Historical Society programs,” Bill Garry explained. By engaging with the many younger families that have moved into Garden City through unique activities and interesting themes, the Historical Society has increased memberships. The Society will be working with the Welcoming Club of Garden City to develop shared objectives and community-centric work. “For fundraising and development initiatives, in order to sustain the Historical Society for the long term we will need to build membership as well as getting into a space of speaking to the Garden City community and those who have ties to here about Legacy giving for the local efforts in preservation. We’ve produced an internal document with themes about our messaging and our collection of historical photographs, which we celebrate and present,” Garry noted. A grant the Garden City Historical Society received from the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation is helping the volunteers find a consultant and organize for enhanced use technology. GCHS trustee Francine Ryan notes that the 21st Century ways of connecting to current and future members are increasingly through social media, the Internet, and virtual presentation. The Historical Society intends to continue working on increasing the portfolio of demographic segments of the village it routinely engages with and has feedback or participation from. Recently the Society offered an “At-Home Art Project” -- distributed in September all on Jackson Pollock (abstract expressionist artist) freestyle painting activity for children, which included three poster boards in a D-I-Y take home kit. Families came to the Eleventh Street Historical Society’s 1872 A.T. Stewart-era Victorian historic house museum to pick up project materials; the rest of the activity took place in the comfort of their homes with virtual engagement. A history lesson was baked into the hands-on learning activity. The Garden City Historical Society offered intriguing visuals as the activity’s description made reference to a historic site, Jackson Pollock’s summer residence in Springs, New York: the present-day museum, the Pollock Krasner House. “Pollock’s technique of pouring and dripping paint is thought to be one of the origins of the term action painting -- paint was literally flowing from his chosen tool onto the canvas” the biography accompanying arts kits explained. Projects were due to the Historical Society (uploading online) by September 30. One hundred children from Garden City participated in the project. All the children’s art projects were submitted and presented online, and a “highlight video” of their tremendous illustrations was posted to the Historical Society’s Facebook page on October 18. Historical Society Trustee Jessica Jones trustee conceived the art program and has led in most social media initiatives. There are two more artist-centric projects planned for children: highlighting the life and work of Georgia O’Keefe and Vincent Van Gogh. “Children and families not only get involved with the Historical Society but they had great fun with artwork and this was something many had not even thought of doing -- combining a history and arts & crafts,” Ryan explained. She hopes that once the pandemic’s impact is alleviated through a vaccine or otherwise, the house museum, headquarters and the Consignment Shop in the basement can be the backdrop to hang all the young community members’ artwork on and welcome visitors. On Wednesday, September 23, the Garden City Historical Society hosted its first “Historic Gardens” event at Old Westbury Gardens. Attendees followed the COVID-19 guidelines and remained physically-distanced during the welcome reception of iced tea and sweet nibbles, and were treated to a multimedia lecture and talk, given by Director of Horticulture Maura Brush. Fundraising for the House Over the past few years, the capital campaign fundraising has brought in about $1.2 to $1.5 million for the restoration work at the Eleventh Street Historic House museum. In September of 2019, the Historical Society’s Annual Benefit and Village Anniversary Party attracted 550 contributions, and benefactors filled tables for the gala. The 2019 event marked both the 100th Anniversary of the Village of Garden City’s Incorporation and the 150th Anniversary of A.T. Stewart’s purchase of the Hempstead Plains and founding of the planned community. With 425 attendees at the Garden City Hotel on September 20, 2019, leadership of the Garden City Historical Society calls that a “breakthrough moment” in the context of building a sustainable village-based nonprofit program. “We committed to serious entertainment and attendees for the Garden City Hotel, menu considerations, and last year the period from August to the event was very strenuous. By Labor Day, we started telling people the event was sold out -- it was hugely successful though the Society spent a lot. We reached the community in a way we had not previously, and we know our Mayor Theresa Trouvé has helped awaken Garden City to celebrating history,” Garry said. While the North Parlor room at the House museum has served as the venue for Society lectures and dinner events, surrounding visitors with 19th Century furnishings, the South Parlor contains a bust of famed American Aviator Charles Lindbergh by Long Island-based sculptor Granville Carter. The 100th anniversary of Lindbergh’s solo trans-Atlantic flight, which took off from Roosevelt Field on May 20, 1927, is expected to draw more visitors to the areas in and around Garden City. The House museum’s lower level features the A.T. Stewart Exchange Consignment Shop, founded in 2007 by long-time GCHS board member Kris Harder. Garry says GCHS is blessed that contributions to pay for House museum costs such as utilities come through this routine influx of some funds. Revenue generated from shop sales support the Society’s budget and maintenance of the museum. Segerdahl notes that the Shop has been a saving grace because during pandemic many other fundraising opportunities were nonexistent. The Society’s website -- TGCHS.org -- as well as the Facebook page of the Consignment Shop bring shopping convenience to users’ fingertips. Evolving Roles For increasing the GCHS’ family and business memberships, there is a new booklet, “Preserving our Past for the Future Depends on You.” Ryan noted Facebook and Instagram as ways of reaching out to people without having to spend a few thousands of dollars on marketing and fundraising initiatives with so much mailed to residents and potential members. “To be able to zero in and have access to technology and people working on the membership drive project, their skills and thinking, is very social media-geared to get people’s attention and help them understand they would enjoy GCHS programs if they are a part of the Society,” Ryan said. With the June 2020 ‘interim’ election of a new Historical Society president, Garry continued in his role as Historical Society treasurer as well as becoming the new president. Mary Mahoney had served as president for two terms, but stepped down in the spring. “Mary’s term comes to its official end in 2021, and then Beth Watras, who was our VP, elected to leave her position at the same time. But this year there was not really a full slate of GCHS Officer elections, and I am officially elected to serve on an interim basis, for the remainder of time until the next membership meeting and election,” Garry noted. There were individual elections to replace both Mahoney as president and Watras as VP. Another longtime volunteer and former trustee of the Historical Society, Maureen Traxler-Dellacona (also the former Western POA president) has also moved on and Garry said she provided tremendous service in important roles with the historical society over a long period of t
ime. For the last several months, she’s been involved with the Western Property Owners’ Association Edgemere Rd. Firehouse (No. 2) Committee work. For winter, the Historical Society is considering plans for a Holiday Marketplace. Stay tuned and connected online and through social media, for details on this and more initiatives.

Jon Segerdahl, Vice President, and Invoice Garry, President, of the Back garden City Historical Society

The new leadership of the Backyard City Historical Society, headquartered at the 1872 Victorian “Apostle House” Museum at 109 Eleventh Road, has a fresh new get on its mission. With new leadership, the culture is is hunting to provide the neighborhood a lot more as an asset and a motor vehicle to teach new generations about the village’s exclusive history.

New Modern society President William (Invoice) Garry grew up in the village and attended Chaminade Higher School. In his hometown, he’s also a member and volunteer appointed to the Village of Garden City’s Board of Commissioners of Recreation and Cultural Affairs, (also known as the Rec. Fee). The new Vice President, Jon Segerdahl, was a village trustee for quite a few yrs, and like Garry he hails from the Japanese part of the village.

Assist for GC’s Historical Methods

The Historic Modern society stays a staunch advocate for preservation of historic structures and buildings in Garden City, and the trigger for preserving historical past has come up frequently. So lots of icons of the earlier, predating the Village’s incorporation in 1919, have made headlines throughout the year — this fall, with stabilization perform ongoing at the St. Paul’s main making the rehabilitation of the Nassau Boulevard LIRR pink brick, herringbone sample parking great deal the previous Extensive Island Motor Parkway extend now built as Stewart Area parking, just off Raymond Court, and village’s license arrangement for the Garden City On line casino, constructed in 1895 and built by well known architect Stanford White, who served on the Backyard Town Company’s board of directors in the late 1800s.

The advocacy for St. Paul’s to remain standing and preserving what can responsibly be kept of the authentic edifice will continue. Although some residents have explained to the Back garden City Board of Trustees that the village should really demolish the historic setting up, there are a lot of who believe that in the attractiveness and character of St. Paul’s.

“Whatever the result in terms of preserving the structure, its of main significance to the Historic Culture and to the Village of Yard Town that it will continue being on the Nationwide Sign up. That is important, but it does not mean we would be insisting on saving every sq. inch of the building as-is. The making was built as a personal school and I really don’t believe I have heard any alternatives of it currently being restored to faculty-use or perform. It is a challenge but I know there is a program out there for St. Paul’s that will be thriving,” Garry stated. *

The local organization neighborhood in Backyard Town really should also profit from a sturdy level of Historic Society outreach and its instructional endeavors.

“We are not potentially an adversary to govt or to the business neighborhood and Yard City Chamber — but the onus is on us, not them, to craft our information and stick to as a result of on our mission in a way for the Society to be noticed as contributors to Back garden City’s prosperity,” Garry claimed.

Segerdahl states from the Board of Trustees to the Chamber, and even the four house owners’ associations, every single degree of civic existence in Garden Town “does not like to be advised what they really should be carrying out.” He sees the option now for the Historic Culture to shift the dialogue it engages in to offer you every single team a new standpoint, turning into additional accommodating and achieving out — starting with inquiring village trustees, the POA administrators and more “How can we enable you, simply because we do have mutual goals?”

Objects like the Fire Station No. 2 (Edgemere Road and Stewart Avenue) and the Nassau Boulevard LIRR station are initiatives the Historical Modern society can offer assets for, this sort of as analysis, throughout the organizing phases, somewhat than remaining contentious the moment options are already underway.

“We can get the information throughout that we’re on the lookout to help out, we’re prepared and this is where we are headed,” Segerdahl claimed.

The Historic Society is engaging with people and newcomers on Fb and Instagram (its deal with is @gardencityhistoricalsociety) and with term of mouth reactions to the modern programming and pursuits that are lining up this tumble and beyond.

Former Village of Garden City Historian and longtime Historic Modern society volunteer and trustee Suzie Alvey moved to Florida a several decades back, but with the earth working remotely in 2020 she “reactivated” with GCHS and has been included in scheduling, and is thought of “GCHS trustee emeritus” Bill Garry says.

“We have a very simple charter and mission as we’re engaged with the preservation area, however the Garden City Historical Modern society is in the education and learning room — we exist as a nonprofit organization chartered by the New York Point out Division of Training. Our charter is in Education and learning room and the easy objective for us is taking artifacts and what we have, like the Property Museum from neighborhood background and bringing the story forward to the local community — both education and learning and preservation are crucial,” he explains.

Nearby management in preservation

Inspite of the several A.T. Stewart-period properties in the Central portion of city, the Village of Yard Metropolis does not have any designated community historic districts. There are only person homes which attained national recognition and official listing on the National Sign-up of Historic Sites, which is under the United States Section of the Interior and Secretary of the Interior’s information. Bill Garry finds it intriguing that Backyard garden City has so significantly in typical with communities across America’s Northeast in terms of more mature, stately households in communities wherever actual estate values are large, but there is no community-amount designation for safeguarding any properties in the village.

“In historic preservation it is really valuable to have a layer of zoning code (community amount) as there is then a move-by of what can be done to protect that status. A significant attract for the village is that it has enchantment in proximity to New York Metropolis and with LIRR stations, it is suburban enough and orderly. In Back garden Town, which other destinations may well not have, there is some uniformity and despite the fact that there are smaller households and more substantial properties, this village from its four sections is pretty uniform. I believe that it is a little something about the format that persons like as they really feel our group cares for the entire group as opposed to chosen sites,” Bill Garry mentioned.

Children’s Artwork Tasks a Good results

The Modern society has the objective of attracting members from during the neighborhood, from younger family members to seniors.

Garry suggests GCHS can construct and maintain memberships throughout the selection of demographics in the community, and often look for progressive new techniques to introduce the rich history of the village, Prolonged Island and the place to new audiences.

“To be thriving in attracting much more relatives memberships we should supply matters that persons will see as in their desire to be a part of. In the education and learning space, we have encouraged 100 households and youngsters about Jackson Pollock, artwork, enjoyment and an exercise to do properly collectively. We’re supplying our means and systems that motivate far more participation and folks to find out Historical Culture programs,” Invoice Garry spelled out.

By participating with the several young people that have moved into Backyard Metropolis by way of one of a kind functions and attention-grabbing themes, the Historic Modern society has enhanced memberships. The Modern society will be working with the Welcoming Club of Back garden City to acquire shared objectives and group-centric perform.

“For fundraising and progress initiatives, in purchase to maintain the Historical Modern society for the prolonged expression we will have to have to make membership as nicely as finding into a space of talking to the Yard Metropolis local community and these who have ties to below about Legacy giving for the community initiatives in preservation. We have generated an internal document with themes about our messaging and our assortment of historical pictures, which we rejoice and present,” Garry mentioned.

A grant the Garden City Historic Culture been given from the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation is serving to the volunteers locate a marketing consultant and manage for increased use technologies. GCHS trustee Francine Ryan notes that the 21st Century techniques of connecting to present-day and long run members are progressively via social media, the Web, and digital presentation. The Historic Modern society intends to proceed performing on increasing the portfolio of demographic segments of the village it routinely engages with and has suggestions or participation from.

A short while ago the Culture provided an “At-Home Art Project” — distributed in September all on Jackson Pollock (summary expressionist artist) freestyle painting action for youngsters, which integrated three poster boards in a D-I-Y acquire dwelling kit. Families arrived to the Eleventh Road Historic Society’s 1872 A.T. Stewart-era Victorian historic house museum to pick up job products the rest of the action took area in the consolation of their homes with digital engagement.

A history lesson was baked into the arms-on finding out action. The Back garden City Historic Culture supplied intriguing visuals as the activity’s description created reference to a historic internet site, Jackson Pollock’s summer time home in Springs, New York: the current-working day museum, the Pollock Krasner Household.

“Pollock’s technique of pouring and dripping paint is assumed to be a person of the origins of the time period action portray — paint was practically flowing from his picked out device on to the canvas” the biography accompanying arts kits discussed. Projects were being owing to the Historical Culture (uploading on the web) by September 30. One particular hundred young children from Garden Metropolis participated in the task.

All the children’s artwork projects were being submitted and presented on the net, and a “highlight video” of their great illustrations was posted to the Historic Society’s Facebook site on Oct 18. Over the past couple several years, the cash campaign fundraising has aimed to bring in about $1.2 to $1.5 million for the restoration perform at the Eleventh Street Historic Household museum. So considerably, the Society is about 25% of the way toward its intention. In September of 2019, the Historic Society’s Yearly Reward and Village Anniversary Occasion captivated 550 contributions, and benefactors loaded tables for the gala. The 2019 occasion marked the two the 100th Anniversary of the Village of Back garden City’s Incorporation and the 150th Anniversary of A.T. The Dwelling museum’s decreased level capabilities the A.T. Stewart Trade Consignment Shop, launched in 2007 by prolonged-time GCHS board member Kris More durable. Garry suggests GCHS is blessed that contributions to shell out for Residence museum expenses these kinds of as utilities occur via this regime influx of some cash. Profits generated from shop revenue guidance the Society’s budget and servicing of the museum.

Segerdahl notes that the Shop has been a conserving grace mainly because in the course of pandemic a lot of other fundraising options were being nonexistent. The Society’s internet site — TGCHS.org — as perfectly as the Facebook webpage of the Consignment Shop carry procuring usefulness to users’ fingertips.

Evolving Roles

For escalating the GCHS’ family and business memberships, there is a new booklet, “Preserving our Earlier for the Long term Depends on You.” Ryan noted Facebook and Instagram as methods of reaching out to people with out having to devote a couple countless numbers of pounds on promoting and fundraising initiatives with so much mailed to citizens and likely associates.

“To be able to zero in and have entry to technological innovation and people today working on the membership generate challenge, their competencies and contemplating, is very social media-geared to get people’s consideration and assist them recognize they would love GCHS applications if they are a part of the Modern society,” Ryan stated.

With the June 2020 ‘interim’ election of a new Historical Modern society president, Garry continued in his role as Historic Culture treasurer as effectively as becoming the new president.

Mary Mahoney experienced served as president for two terms, but stepped down in the spring.

“Mary’s phrase will come to its formal conclusion in 2021, and then Beth Watras, who was our VP, elected to depart her placement at the exact same time. But this yr there was not genuinely a whole slate of GCHS Officer elections, and I am officially elected to provide on an interim foundation, for the remainder of time until finally the future membership meeting and election,” Garry pointed out.
