Chippendales lobbies up- POLITICO

With Daniel Lippman

STRIPPING DOWN AND LOBBYING UP: Chippendales, the famed male dancer troupe, has turned to K Street to help it tap into federal pandemic aid for the live events industry. The iconic franchise, known for commanding the attention of bachelorette parties lined across the Rio All Suites Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, retained the services of white-shoe law and lobbying firm Greenberg Traurig to lobby on a pandemic-era program designed to help concert halls, movie theaters and others in the live events industry, according to a disclosure filed this week.

— Lobbying records show it’s the first time Chippendales has retained federal lobbyists. And it’s further evidence that the pandemic has pushed businesses of all stripes — and sartorial reputations — to turn to the government for a lifeline amid difficult economic times.

— As the world shut down in the spring of 2020, the closures hit the live events industry especially hard, and the Chippendales, like any other business, had to adapt to the new normal after canceling its “Get Naughty” Tour and Vegas performances.

— The show’s performers began posting quarantine workout tutorials on social media, donning their signature uniform of only bow ties, cuffs and shorts. A few weeks later, Chippendales debuted [email protected], half-hour virtual stripteases performed over Zoom, FaceTime or Google Hangouts — though the company offered free virtual performances to health care workers, first responders, and ticket holders to a since-canceled show.

— Chippendales dancers have since returned to the stage. And shows this spring, hosted by “Jersey Shore” star Vinny Guadagnino, have packed the dancers’ showroom once again, according to local news reports.

— But their lobbying hire comes as lawmakers on the Hill weigh one final round of Covid assistance for small businesses that would, in the case of entertainment venues, include additional money for venues and extend the date by which grant recipients could incur reimbursable expenses. The Chippendales did not provide comment prior to publication. Greenberg’s Diane Blagman, whose other entertainment clients include the Recording Academy, will lobby on the account. More here from yours truly.

Happy Friday and welcome to PI. What should we be looking for in this week’s LDA filings? Let me know: [email protected]. And be sure to follow me on Twitter: @caitlinoprysko.
WALL STREET FLOCKS TO PENNSYLVANIA GOP PRIMARY: “Wall Street executives are pouring millions of dollars into the Republican primary race for Pennsylvania’s open U.S. Senate seat — where veteran physician Dr. Mehmet Oz and former Bridgewater CEO Dave McCormick lead in the polls — making the primary one of the most expensive in the 2022 midterm elections,” CNBC’s Brian Schwartz reports.

— “During the first quarter, dozens of the men’s allies and close friends — current and former Wall Street CEOs and executives — have hosted fundraisers, directed contributions to their campaigns and donated directly to the candidates and political action committees supporting their bids, according to Federal Election Commission filings, invitations to private fundraisers, and interviews with people close to both men, some of whom asked not to be named in order to speak freely.”

— “The contest has drawn support from executives at Goldman Sachs,” where McCormick’s wife is an executive, “as well as billionaire CEOs at Blackstone Group and Citadel, among others. … Executives at Goldman have been backing McCormick’s campaign, with nearly 60 of the firm’s leaders donating directly to his operation, FEC records show. Goldman CEO David Solomon hosted a fundraiser for the candidate in February, while John Rogers, chief of staff and secretary to Goldman’s board of directors, has been encouraging other Goldman leaders to donate to the campaign, according to people familiar with the matter.”

— “Oz also has his own friends on Wall Street and counts Trump among his supporters. John Mack, the former CEO and chairman of Morgan Stanley, contributed $600,000 over the first two months of the year to the pro-Oz super PAC, federal election records show.”

API DRAFTS A CARBON TAX PROPOSAL: The American Petroleum Institute has “drafted a proposal urging Congress to adopt a carbon tax, which would put a surcharge on gasoline and other fossil fuels to discourage greenhouse-gas emissions,” The Wall Street Journal’s Timothy Puko and Ted Mann report.

— “The draft proposal was approved by the American Petroleum Institute’s climate committee last month, according to a document reviewed by The Wall Street Journal. The measure must still be approved by the group’s executive committee. A carbon tax would raise gasoline prices and other energy costs for consumers. Some API members want to delay action on the proposal amid near-record prices at the pump, contending it could alienate not only voters but Republican lawmakers friendly to the oil industry ahead of midterm elections, according to people involved in the discussions or who were briefed on them.”

— API’s plan “calls for assessing gasoline wholesalers, power plants and others a tax starting at $35 to $50 a ton for carbon dioxide generated by the fossil fuel they sell or use, with annual adjustments for inflation and other factors, according to the document reviewed by the Journal,” which also reports that “several climate committee members pushed to send the measure to the API’s executive committee for final approval,” but “instead the measure was referred to API’s lobbying committee, which has pushed to delay the completion and rollout of the policy until later this year.”

FEC REQUESTS INFO ON TRANSFER BY HASTINGS CAMPAIGN COMMITTEE: The FEC has asked the campaign committee of the late Florida Rep. Alcee Hastings for more information regarding a payment the campaign disclosed on its quarterly report this month to the late congressman’s daughter.

— Hastings, who died last April while in office, still had more than $28,000 in his campaign account at the end of the first quarter of 2022, according to a report filed with the FEC. In a letter to committee treasurer Tomas McIntosh on Thursday, the campaign finance watchdog asked about a reported payment of $2,000 to Maisha Williams for a “transfer of excess funds,” according to the filing. The agency asked Hastings’ committee to “clarify the nature of this transaction,” with a response requested by May 26. The transfer was just one of four disbursements reported by the committee last quarter, with the other three being payments of $22.50 to Bank of America for bank fees.

— The payments from Hastings’ committee nearly a year after his death are unusual, but not unheard of, and in most cases are legal. A POLITICO analysis in February found “accounts associated with eight late politicians that still have money in the bank, some with hundreds of thousands of dollars, or debts that, according to Federal Election Commission records, remain unpaid.” The so-called zombie PACs and campaign committees “have been paying for such things as communications consulting, campaign contributions, car rentals, or fees for former associates.”

FOSI BOOTS FACEBOOK: A top children’s safety group has revoked Meta’s membership in the organization and resigned its seat on Facebook’s Safety Advisory Board in the wake of a Washington Post report detailing how the platform retained a PR firm to launch a smear campaign against rival TikTok.

— In a statement, the Family Online Safety Institute’s board of directors said the report, which said Targeted Victory’s campaign included “placing op-eds and letters to the editor in major regional news outlets, promoting dubious stories about alleged TikTok trends that actually originated on Facebook,” had prompted an internal review into whether Facebook’s actions “align with the organizational mission of working to make the online world a safer place for kids and families. One of the core tenets of FOSI is to combat misinformation to help educate and inform parents and policymakers.”

— The group, whose members include Amazon, Google, Microsoft and TikTok, said Facebook could potentially reapply to be a member in 18 months.

Jason Resendez will be the new president and CEO of the National Alliance for Caregiving. He previously was executive director of the UsAgainstAlzheimer’s Center for Brain Health Equity.

Rusty Schultz is joining Platform Communications as director of public affairs and corporate comms. He previously was chief of staff for Wisconsin state Assembly Majority Leader Jim Steineke, and is a Ron Johnson and Scott Walker alum.
